Businessman to breathe new life into Southampton property
A former cycle livery in Southampton could soon host a new business, according to a planning application. The application, filed by Jose Manuel Almeida Sousa and received by the Planning Department in April, proposes turning the former Oleander Cycle branch on Middle Road into a bulk goods/warehouse store, and takeout deli. While the building is currently vacant and zoned as residential one, the property had been used for decades as a cycle livery. Businessman Ray Madeiros ran Ray's Cycles from the building for 25 years before selling the business to Oleander Cycles in 1994.Most of the existing structure on the site would remain unchanged, with the exception of a small kitchen to the north side of the building. The application stated: “The proposed development is modest in scale and in keeping with the character of the adjacent properties and the predominant character of the surrounding area.“The proposed commercial kitchen represents a very modest increase of site coverage and a nominal extension of the existing commercial use in an area zoned residential one.”The application received no objections, and has been provisionally approved.
