Syringe maker issues recall
A US healthcare products company has recalled several lots of syringes sold in Bermuda and the US.Covidien initiated the voluntary recall of 14 lots of their Monoject prefill flush syringes on August 19. Some of the syringes were filled with water but not sterilised during the production process and are not safe for use.Additionally, the company stated that some of the syringe caps, labels, contents and wrappers in the recalled lots are mismatched. The two kinds of syringes are sodium chloride flush syringes and heparin lock flush syringes. If the non-sterilised or mismatched syringes are used, they could cause life-threatening infections in the bloodstream or clotting.Covidien is requesting that customers identify any syringes from the affected lot numbers in their inventory and return them.A Bermuda Government spokesperson said the Ministry of Health and Seniors does not have information on specific syringes that are imported into Bermuda, but they will circulate the recall information to healthcare providers. The affected products and lot numbers can be found on Covidien’s website at http://investor.covidien.com/phoenix.zhtml?c=207592&p=irol-newsArticle&id=1848321.
