A CableVision food drive benefit concert at the National Sports Centre, which brought close to 1,000 guests bearing donations for the Island’s needy, has collected 24 giant barrels of food. The gospel show was deemed “a great success” by host Bermuda CableVision, whose general manager Terry Roberson added: “Nobody wanted to leave.”Admission was free to Sunday’s 6pm bash, featuring a host of local gospel artists along with church choirs.Guests were asked to bring at least three non-perishable food items for the company’s ‘Open Hands Loving Hearts’ food drive.Yesterday CableVision tallied the takings and reported 24 barrels, each with a capacity of 55 gallons, had been collected from the event.“We were happy with the outcome — it felt like prayers were answered, with no rain,” Mr Roberson said. The food drive was prompted in April by empty shelves at the Eliza DoLittle Society Food Bank.CableVision maintains “big blue barrels” for food collection at locations around the Island.Fourteen barrels went to Eliza Dolittle, where director Margaret Ward expects to serve “at least 60” clients in need today — as well as passing the food on to a minimum of ten food banks around the Island.“This will last us to the end of the week,” Ms Ward said, noting that her organisation’s need for donations is a constant, year-round concern.Five food barrels were passed on yesterday to the Salvation Army, and the remaining five to the Seventh-Day Adventist Church programme.
