Protesters threaten Miss World pageant
The organisers of the Miss Bermuda beauty contest are satisfied that winner Katherine Arnfield will be safe attending the Miss World contest in Jakarta — despite Islamic protests over the international pageant. It was reported by Indonesian news papers that several Islamic groups protested on Tuesday regarding the exposure of the contestants’ skin, and made their intentions clear to surround the Sentul International Convention Center in Bogor, West Java when pageant contestants arrive there from Bali.Director of the Miss Bermuda Pageant, Milika Seymour, declined to give this paper Ms Arnfield’s contact information, because Bermuda is ten hours behind Indonesia and Ms Arnfield “is on a really tight schedule at the moment.”She did, however, speak on behalf of Ms Arnfield.“I’m not worried about the situation, they are not in Jakarta, they are in Bali,” she said. “Miss World pageant security is very secure.”Ms Seymour said that although she hasn’t spoke to Ms Arnfield about the protests yet, she said Miss Bermuda, and her mother, were “definitely aware there are protests going on before she left Bermuda.”The Royal Gazette was unable to receive a comment from Miss World Organisation chairwoman, Julia Morley.
