A Devonshire man was remanded into custody this morning after he admitted stealing a woman’s handbag to buy drugs.Andre Tucker, 31, pleaded guilty to entering a First Avenue, Devonshire home as a trespasser on Friday and stealing several items, including more than $1,000 of cash.Magistrates’ Court heard that at around 7pm on Friday, the victim was in her kitchen when she was alerted to a sound by her nine-year-old daughter. When they went into their living room, they discovered Tucker standing next to a table with her handbag on it.Tucker then grabbed the bag and fled, running out of the house towards Middle Road and jumping down a border wall. The victim told police her handbag itself cost around $150 and contained credit cards, a $450 camera and a quantity of cash.Officers also spoke to a neighbour, who told the court he confronted Tucker earlier that evening. At that time, he said Tucker claimed he was looking for a lost dog.The neighbour told police he had a CCTV camera on his property and was able to give the officers a picture of the suspect.Tucker was subsequently arrested at his home and admitted stealing the handbag. He told officers he used the cash to purchase cocaine and dumped the bag with the other contents in some bushes. He later took officers to a neighbouring property, where the bag was found hidden in a large planter.Prosecutor Carrington Mahoney told the court Tucker was an unemployed father of five “heavily addicted” to cocaine.Senior Magistrate Archibald Warner ordered both a social inquiry report and a drug assessment on Tucker, remanding him into custody until he can be sentenced next month.
