Final summer ‘Beating of the Retreat’ tonight

The final summer ‘Beating of the Retreat’ will be performed by the Bermuda Regiment in Hamilton this evening at 8.30pm.The parade starts at the Flagpole on Front Street and the guest of honour will be Hamilton Mayor Graeme Outerbridge.Major Dwight Robinson, the Regiment’s director of music, said the Regiment Band had just returned from a tour to the Estes Park Scottish-Irish Festival in Colorado and had managed to escape the devastating floods there by less than 24 hours.Maj Robinson said: “Estes Park is one of the cities most severely damaged in the recent flooding in Colorado. The band was well-received [at the festival], especially the Corps of Drums, with their rhythmically-choreographed stick drill and display.“The band played very well and did Bermuda proud. We performed over three nights, before a very appreciative audience, in near-perfect conditions. The games have been put on without exception for the past 40-odd years and have always been hugely successful.“The band last played in Estes Park in 1989. It was nice to go back to the picturesque mountains [and] see how the product has developed.”He said his soldiers would play some of the same tunes from that “successful tour” this evening.Street closures and traffic diversions will be in force from 8pm to 10pm this evening during the ceremony.Front Street between Queen Street and Parliament Street will be closed, as will Burnaby Hill, between Front Street and Reid Street.Traffic travelling east along Front Street will be diverted onto Queen Street, while traffic travelling west along Front Street will be diverted onto Parliament Street.A special Beating of the Retreat parade will be hosted by Bermuda Police Service on October 9, also at the Flagpole, as part of the Police Week celebrations.
