Shoplifter given eight-month jail sentence
A career criminal has been jailed for eight months after shoplifting less than $100 worth of groceries from a supermarket.Homeless Kevin Webb, 49, stole bottles of port and sherry, hot dogs, cheese and sausages from the Somers Supermarket in St George’s on August 27.In Magistrates’ Court this morning, Webb claimed that he stole the items because he had been invited to a barbecue and did not want to show up empty-handed.Crown Prosecutor Susan Mulligan told the court that, after choosing his items, Webb entered the supermarket’s staff bathroom and hid his stash of goods — valued at $98.03 — in his backpack. He then walked out of the store briskly without paying. But his crime was spotted by a store manager examining CCTV footage, and Webb was arrested two days later. After hearing Webb’s explanation for the crime, Senior Magistrate Archibald Warner asked: “Inmates don’t have to bring concessions to barbecues, do they?”Webb, who has an extensive history of committing similar crimes, replied: “I did have plans to pay the supermarket back. But I am truly sorry. Look what Kevin Webb has become.”In January, Webb was jailed for 30 days after stealing $35 worth of food and liquor from a supermarket, even as staff implored him not to get in trouble.“I am a revolutionary; I am Robin Hood. I steal from the rich and give to the needy. I told Warner I won’t stop, and if you let me out I will do it again,” Webb is reported to have told police following his arrest for that offence.
