Christie’s next in line to the Lusher throne

Queen in waiting: Christie Plathe is planning on following on in her mother's footsteps.

The granddaughter of real estate ‘Queen‘ Joy Lusher has big plans as she prepares to become the third generation to enter the family business, Joy Lusher Real Estate.Christie Plathe, 25, is set to become one of the youngest Bermudians to obtain her salesperson’s license, should she pass her exam this Saturday.“My grandmother was the first ‘Queen of Real Estate’”, said Ms Plathe. “My mom was the second. I plan to be the next ‘Queen’, but for now I aspire to hold the title as ‘Princess of Real Estate.’”After graduating from Western University in London, Ontario, with a degree in political science, Ms Plathe said she had little idea how much real estate agents like her mother, Susan Lusher, and grandmother Joy had to learn.Studying three hours a day and attending classes at the Bermuda College every Wednesday, Ms Plathe said: “I am truly quite surprised just how much knowledge real estate entails. You need to be brushed up on all aspects of life, including politics, economics, that sort of stuff, to really be in the know. The material I am studying covers a wide range.“It’s a really tough exam, so fingers crossed.”After taking her first steps into the industry following a move back to Bermuda this July, Ms Plathe said she has spent the past few months shadowing and learning the ropes from her mother, who took over the business some 15 years ago, and plans to eventually hand it over to her daughter. After graduating, Ms Plathe moved to Toronto, where she worked at a surgical weight loss company in sales and post-op care.“That transition was pretty easy”, she said. “It was a good starting job. Not very tough, but it was a good learning experience.”After gaining experience in Toronto, Ms Plathe said she moved back to Bermuda to take advantage of the current real estate market.“The market is good right now. That’s why I came back. I wanted to come back straight after university but the market wasn’t doing so well and I needed to get experience in the business world. It’s definitely a buyer’s market right now. If you’re looking to purchase a home, now is the time to do it. It’s not a seller’s market, unfortunately. A lot of prices have dropped drastically, in both rentals and sales.By entering the industry at such a young age, Ms Plathe hopes to be the go-to woman for when her generation begins looking at home-ownership.“That’s another reason I came [home]. I wanted to make sure that I would try it young, and if it doesn’t work out move back to the city and start something new. But if it does work out, I’m at the perfect age because people that I know in our age bracket are going to start looking to buy in the next few years. So I want to start to build up a good reputation and develop a rapport with everyone.”But can Ms Plathe achieve the longevity of her grandmother, who spent 60 years in the business?“That would take me to 85, so I hope not,” she said.
