Wheddon driver may have dozed off
The man who caused the crash that killed Bermudian Major Christian Wheddon was asleep at the wheel or mistook a disused slip road for a lane, according to a UK Judge.Fijian national Netani Kepa, 28, pleaded guilty last week in UK’s Oxford Crown Court to causing the death of the 43-year-old father by careless driving. He was subsequently sentenced to 300 hours of unpaid labour, £500 of prosecution costs and was banned from driving for a year.According to a report in The Oxford Mail, the court heard the 4x4 driven by Kepa had overtaken another vehicle on the A34 before moving into the inside lane and a disused slip road and crashing on September 9 last year.Kepa was seriously injured in the collision but Maj Wheddon, who was a passenger in the vehicle, was killed.During the hearing, Judge Mary Jane Mowat told the court: “No one will ever be sure why this tragic incident occurred.“There are two theories: one that you feel asleep at the wheel and two that you mistook the disused slip road along the carriageway for an inside lane. I am inclined to favour the second, but I repeat it is not possible to say for sure.”The newspaper also reported that Kepa, from the Lucknow Barracks in Hampshire, has left the Army due to a medical condition.Maj Wheddon had served with both the Bermuda Police Service and the Bermuda Regiment and acted as Adjutant for the Regiment and aide-de-camp for the Governor. At the time of his death he was being groomed to become the Commanding Officer of the Regiment, and was taking part in a leadership training course in the UK. He has been described as a loving father, an avid sailor and a dedicated officer.
