Filipino fundraiser raises more than $10,000 for typhoon relief
The Association of Filipinos in Bermuda raised more than $10,000 at a lunch held yesterday in aid of the victims of Typhoon Haiyan.
The event drew about 300 people from across the community including Governor George Fergusson and Home Affairs Minister Michael Fahy.
It was held in the wake of the super storm which struck the Philippines on Friday, leaving widespread devastation.
“Information has been hard to get from the Philippines because power and communication lines have been destroyed, however during the luncheon, a Filipino in attendance received a text message that relatives, including young children, had died,” a spokeswoman said. “This was a poignant moment during the event and reminded all present about the harsh reality and importance of the occasion. Others still wait to hear anxiously for any news from their families.”
Funds raised are to be divided equally among the Catholic Relief Services, Operation Blessing and the Philippine National Red Cross.
Anyone wishing to donate is asked to send cheques to the Association of Filipinos in Bermuda at PO Box HM 1100, Hamilton HMEX.
