Island’s population rises to 64,911
Bermuda’s estimated population stood at 64,911 at the end of 2012 — an increase of 266, or 0.4 percent, over the 2011 estimate of 64,685.
The figures on births, marriages and deaths, reported by the Registry General, were tabled at the opening of Parliament. Population estimates are based on the 2010 Census.
The report showed a decrease in live births, with 648 recorded — a drop of 22, or 3.3 percent, on the preceding year. A single baby was born outside of hospital, at a Devonshire residence.
There were 259 children born out of wedlock last year — again, a drop on 2011’s figure. Data from the last five years show 40 percent of children born out of wedlock.
Three adoptions were recorded, down five from 2011’s figure of eight.
Marriages rose significantly last year, giving a figure of 601 — up 8.3 percent on the previous year’s 555 marriages. Non-residents accounted for just over half, at 310.
The Registry General conducted 123 civil marriages — 20 percent of all nuptials.
Meanwhile, 422 deaths of residents were reported for last year: 244 men, and 178 women.
Fifteen deaths were recorded among non-residents: three female and 12 male. Ten visitors died from natural causes; one was recorded as a death by hanging, and the remaining four were from accidents on the road.
Additionally, three stillbirths were counted. There was a single infant mortality recorded for 2012.
