Football club scores $4,053 for charity
A football club’s month-long campaign to raise funds to support a cancer charity — by scoring goals and wearing pink jerseys — has resulted in a $4,053,35 cheque for the Bermuda Cancer and Health Centre.
North Village Community Club ran its annual ‘Kicks for Cancer’ campaign for the fifth time last month and it proved to be its most successful, raising almost twice as much as in previous years.
For every goal scored by the team during October, which was Breast Cancer Awareness Month, the Freisenbruch Meyer Group gave $100. Team members also donned pink jerseys to raise awareness for breast cancer.
Further funds were raised through pledge forms and the sale of pink T-shirts, which were worn by many North Village fans.
Club president Stephen Coddington said: “The support that we received was overwhelming. It was especially great to see our youth get involved and understand the value of helping others.”
Bermuda Cancer and Health education officer Rhonda Smith-Simmons said: “It’s because of the generosity of donors such as North Village Community Club and Freisenbruch Meyer Group that we are able to ensure that the women of our country have the proper resources in place to achieve early detection which is so critical.”
Proceeds will support the centre’s outreach initiatives which include their Equal Access Fund, Education and Awareness Programmes and the Bermuda Cancer and Health Scholarship.
