A march in protest at plans to shut down the Lamb Foggo Urgent Care Centre has been called for tomorrow at noon.

The east end facility, run by Bermuda Hospitals Board (BHB), is to be closed due to high costs and low usage.

However, according to Progressive Labour Party MP for St David’s Lovitta Foggo, petitions calling for the centre to be kept running have garnered around 3,000 signatures.

The protest rally is to run from the Bermuda Industrial Union Headquarters to the House of Assembly.

Health Minister Patricia Gordon-Pamplin has called the closure “painful” but said the decision lies with BHB — which expects to save around $250,000 a year by closing Lamb Foggo.

Opened in 2009, the centre has reported seeing an average of 14 patients a day.

According to BHB chairman Jonathan Brewin, the cost of an urgent care visit to the patient is $422, while a GP visit is about half — and a basic visit to the Emergency Room is around $270.

Mr Brewin has said BHB, which could be in debt by the end of the current financial year, cannot afford to keep carrying the loss.
