A pair of miracle twins born three months prematurely and eight days apart are amazing doctors with their progress.

Mother Edonna Bean was flown off the Island to a health centre in Canada, last month, after she developed complications 25 weeks into her pregnancy last month. Her first son, Emyr, was born on November 25 and twin brother Esai was delivered by emergency c-section eight days later on December 3.

Yesterday Mrs Bean contacted The Royal Gazette to provide a progress report on her “miracle twins” — and said that both boys are doing well in the neonatal intensive care unit of the IWK Health Centre in Halifax, Nova Scotia.

She said Emyr has maintained his birth weight of 1.7 pounds but is to have his IV food intake increased so that he can put on weight.

“There aren’t any concerns for him — he is continuing to do well on the conventional ventilator and doctors and nurses are pleased with his progress,” Mrs Bean said.

Her second son, Esai, has dropped weight, but Mrs Bean said this was typical of all premature babies in the first few days after birth.

“He is doing well on the CPAP [continuous positive airway pressure ] treatment and remains relaxed and adjusting to arriving into the world early,” she said.

“His cranial exam, along with Emyr’s, came back perfect — they do not have any bleeding in the brain which is found in some premature babies. Thank God.”

Mrs Bean said that both she and husband Ryan wanted to thank friends and family in Bermuda for the flood of support that they have received.

“We as parents cannot thank our Bermudian family for the many prayer as clearly they are being heard and answered,” she said.

“Also we would like to thank our church family and our places of employment for their unwavering support and genuine love for us as individuals as well as a collective family. Thank you to my Mom and Dad — Donna Williams and Edward Williams — for supporting Ry and I from the very beginning without hesitation.

“Thank you to [Royal Gazette reporter] Ceola Wilson for capturing our vision and heart to share our story to encourage another family who may be faced with this same situation.

“Thank you all and please do not stop the prayers.”
