Man admits stealing scotch
A Pembroke man received a three-month suspended prison sentence after admitting he stole a bottle of Dewar’s scotch from Miles Market.
Gary Dillas, 60, was seen by Miles staff enter the store around 2.25pm on July 11, prosecutor Maria Sofianos told Magistrates’ Court this morning.
Dillas went straight to the liquor section, where he took the $33.85 bottle of scotch and attempted to hide it, the court heard.
Staff noticed Dillas was concealing something under his arm as he exited the grocery store but he had already driven away by the time staff attempted to confront him.
A subsequent review of CCTV footage enabled Dillas to be identified and he was later arrested and taken to Hamilton Police Station on October 30.
“He’s an equal opportunity liquor thief,” Senior Magistrate Archibald Warner said, referring to Dillas’ history of convictions for stealing bottles of alcohol.
Mr Warner handed Dillas a three-month suspended sentence and ordered him to “go to Miles Market today and pay the money you owe them.”
Dillas, holding his hand to his heart, said: “I hope to never see you again.”
