Live BDA concert raises $10,000 for Philippines storm relief

A fundraising concert has raised more than $10,000 to support those impacted by a deadly typhoon, according to organisers.

Live BDA, organised by the Whitfield Group and the Association of Filipinos in Bermuda, raised around $10,740 for the Red Cross, the Operation Blessing Foundation Philippines and Catholic Relief Services.

The four-hour concert held earlier this month featured performances by a host of artists, including Heather Nova, Glass Onion Band, Bones, Working Title, The Filipino Association Dancers.

Also performing were Sonique Sanctuary, Sultans of Swing, DIA (Devil’s Isle Audio), Joy T Barnum and the Milton Raposo Duo, Jessica Rendora, DJ Choice and Ed Christopher.

Suzie Pewter of the Whitfield Group thanked the entertainers and other supporters for volunteering their time and talent to aid the relief effort, while vice president of the Association for Filipinos in Bermuda, Rowena Comber, said the event was a huge success.

“Everybody I spoke to had so much fun,” she said. “The money raised from this event will make a massive difference to the rehabilitation of families still suffering in the Philippines.

“The Association would like to thank everyone who attended for their amazing support and for those involved in the event, especially Mrs Suzie Pewter and Mr Chamberlain for taking the initiative in helping our folks back home.”

The event was just one of several recent fundraisers aimed at helping those affected by Typhoon Haiyan, which struck the Philippines last month.

The storm, described as one of the most powerful ever to make landfall, killing more than 6,000 people and affecting millions of others.

The Bermuda Red Cross revealed last week that Bermudians have pledged more than $285,000 to aid in typhoon relief, and donations were still coming in.
