Suspended sentence for shoplifter who stole DVD player
A 45-year-old man today admitted stealing a DVD player from Price Rite on New Year’s Eve.
Alexander Christopher, of Talavara Lane, St George’s, said he had been drinking when he stole the DVD player, valued at $172.
Christopher was seen by management browsing the electronics section of the Price Rite store, located at 10 Mill Reach Lane, Pembroke, prosecutor Maria Sofianos told Magistrates’ Court this morning.
After Christopher left the electronics section, management observed a DVD player had gone missing. Subsequent CCTV footage showed Christopher taking the DVD player and walking out of the store without paying.
After reviewing the CCTV footage, police officers identified the man, who was known to them from prior offences, and arrested Christopher at his home.
Christopher told Senior Magistrate Archibald Warner he was willing to pay for the stolen goods, adding he was “very remorseful”.
“I had too much to drink, but I won’t blame it on that,” said Christopher. “I take responsibility for my actions.”
Mr Warner gave Christopher a six-month jail sentence, suspended for two years, and ordered him to pay $172 restitution to MarketPlace, which owns Price Rite, by January 20.
