Church raises $2,700 for typhoon appeal
The Wesley Methodist Church has raised almost $2,700 in donations to support those impacted by a typhoon in the Philippines last year.
Representatives from the church said the congregation was able to raise $2,678 for typhoon relief through an appeal. The funds have been sent to the United Church in Canada and will likely to be doubled by the Canadian Government, which has pledged to match donations to the United Church.
The United Church has been working with partners in the Philippines to rebuild homes and distribute relief packages and water to those affected by Typhoon Haiyan, which killed more than 6,000 people and left even more homeless when it tore through the country in November.
Reverend Calvin Stone said he was pleased that the congregation was able to raise the funds for those in need despite being under their own financial constraints due to the economic downturn.
“When people go above and beyond what they usually give to the congregation it is always a pleasing thing, and this is above and beyond what is usually given,” he said.
“We has a similar push when disasters struck Haiti, Japan and even Australia, so I am glad that we continue to be globally aware.”
He added that the United Church in Canada and the Methodist Church as a whole have a long history of charity, which the congregation was happy to be able to continue.
