Craig Cannonier is calling for closer collaboration between Bermuda and other British Overseas Territories in order to “pursue matters of mutual interest”.

The Premier spoke yesterday following a meeting in Tortola, British Virgin Islands, with BVI Premier Orlando Smith and Chief Minister of Gibraltar, Fabian Picardo to discuss the benefits of greater cooperation between BOTs.

“Our talks were fruitful,” Mr Cannonier said following the meeting.

“We all recognise that the British Overseas Territories have much to offer each other and the world. Bermuda leads in insurance, BVI leads in company registrations, Gibraltar leads in online gaming, Cayman leads in hedge funds, and the Falkland Islands have significant oil reserves. We are confident that these leadership positions will enable us to work together from a position of strength.”

Yesterday’s meeting follows on from the first conference of BOT leaders held in London last September. According to a spokesman for the Premier, the three leaders pledged to encourage further meetings of BOT heads to encourage closer cooperation.

Today the Premier, who is accompanied by Cabinet Secretary Derrick Binns, will take part in a panel discussion at the annual BVI Business Outlook Conference before returning to Bermuda on Saturday.
