European reggae artist Mitchell Brunings has vowed to “do my best” when he honours the legacy of one music’s most iconic figures at Bermuda Athletic Association Gymnasium on Saturday night.

The Dutchman will headline the Legend Bob Marley tribute presented by Veterans in Action.

Reggae great Marley left the world to mourn his passing after he died from cancer in 1981 at the age 36.

“It will be a tribute to the prophet Bob Marley, so I will do my best to honour his legacy by singing some of his classics and a few of my favourites,” Mr Brunings said. “If you are a Bob Marley fan I invite you to come and share the love for his music and participate in spreading his message through song and dance.”

Mr Brunings has been a fan of reggae music all of his life.

He dabbled in R&B, Soul and Jazz music before ultimately deciding that his voice was “best suited” for reggae music.

Incidentally, Mr Brunings’ voice bears a striking resemblance to that of the late Marley, who is widely regarded as the ‘King of Reggae’.

According to Rolling Stone Magazine: “Reggae purists have never heard a voice like this since Robert Nesta Marley himself.”

“I get that a lot, but I don’t hear it myself,” Mr Brunings said. “I try to honour the man as much as possible when singing his songs, but I also try to give it as much of my own flavour as possible without damaging his songs of course.”

Performing in Bermuda will enable Mr Brunings to fulfil a desire to visit a place he has long admired.

“I have always wanted to come to Bermuda, I am thrilled,” he said. “The Island has always had a magical aura around it, not just from the triangle stories, but also from all the beautiful pictures that I have seen on the internet.

“I have a friend who is from the Island and she has told me so many beautiful stories about Bermuda, I am psyched to finally come and be able to see it for myself.”

Mr Brunings’ career received a massive shot in the arm after he finished runner up on the Dutch reality television competition dubbed ‘Voice of Holland’.

“That has had a major impact on my career,” he said. “I was only a backing vocalist before I entered that show and now people from all over the world know my name from just the blind audition on that show.

“It has opened doors for me that would otherwise would have stayed close. It gave me a platform to show my musical potential and to let the world hear my voice.”

Also performing Bob Marley covers during Saturday’s show are local artists Shorta Ranks, Rivah, Sista Mandy, Zenji San, Kulcha and Shine Hayward to name a few.

Deejays Jugglin J, YGS, Magnum Force, Prophecy and King Jyrus will entertain those in attendance during the musical interludes.

Gates open at 8pm.
