Union men to mull Hamilton Princess counter proposals

Unionised bar staff at the Hamilton Princess Hotel will hold a crunch meeting this morning to consider their next move in the dispute over job cuts at the resort.

And The Royal Gazette understands that threatened industrial action by workers last night was averted after management came forward with undisclosed proposals to resolve the dispute.

Management axed ten bar staff at the flagship hotel on January 24. claiming that the jobs no longer existed.

Five of the sacked workers — three bar porters and two in -room dining captains — are represented by the Bermuda Industrial Union, which condemned the move claiming it was executed with “no consultation or discussion”.

Union officials and hotel management met last Tuesday when it is understood the BIU put forward a number of recommendations for management to consider.

The hotel came back with a response at the end of last week, and those proposals will be put to staff at this morning’s meeting.

Details of those proposals have been kept under wraps by both sides in the dispute. Yesterday BIU president Chris Furbert said he would make no public comment until his members had reviewed the proposals later today.

Fairmont Hamilton Princess general manager Len Czarnecki said the two sides were “at an impasse” but added that the resort “looks forward to talking with the BIU to resolve the matter at hand”.

At a press conference last week questioning the redundancies, Mr Furbert said that remaining bartenders had vowed to work to rule over the Super Bowl weekend, refusing to perform any additional duties created by the loss of bar porters.

“How do you do this sort of thing in 2014 knowing full well that you want some people to pick up additional responsibilities and not even have a conversation with them on what needs to happen?”

However, it is understood that no action was taken by bar staff during last night’s Super Bowl.
