Gibbons family donates $500,000 to new hospital fund
Edmund Gibbons Ltd has given a half a million dollar donation towards the redevelopment of King Edward VII Memorial Hospital, the company announced today.
A cheque for $500,000 was given to Wendy Augustus, executive director of Bermuda Hospitals Charitable Trust, by members of the family-owned firm, including CEO Sir David Gibbons, Grant Gibbons, David Gibbons Jr and James Gibbons.
Former Premier Sir David, son of company founder Edmund, said his mother Winifred dedicated her life’s work to philanthropic and charitable efforts while serving for 25 years as deputy chairman of Bermuda Hospitals Board.
“I know that this contribution will help honour my mother’s commitment to healthcare in Bermuda, as well as my father’s dedication to Bermudian entrepreneurship and business development.
“It is an honour to make a donation that will help the Bermuda Hospitals Charitable Trust develop a world-class medical facility.”
Ms Augustus said: “The legacy and commitment to our hospital by the Gibbons family is demonstrated through this gift from Edmund Gibbons Limited. Notably, Winifred Gibbons’s investment has been invaluable.
“This generous gift will have a profound impact on the health and well-being of our community.”
Edmund Gibbons Ltd comprises several independently owned businesses, including Gibbons Company, Colonial Insurance, Bermuda Motors and Burrows Lightbourn. It is also a minority owner of Capital G Bank, after the recent amalgamation with Clarien Group.
