A 67-year-old man attempting to be the first person to cross the Atlantic from Europe to North America in a kayak is expected to arrive in Bermuda today for repairs after his kayak’s rudder broke.

Aleksander Doba’s rudder broke last Thursday during a storm, within days of the estimated completion time of his voyage, which has taken over three months.

Mr Doba, from Poland, set out from Portugal on October 5 last year, aiming to arrive in Florida this month, but with 90 percent of his journey finished, Mr Doba has been “fighting unexpected storms and paddling in circles,” according to National Geographic, who are sponsoring Mr Dobda’s record attempt.

A friend and supporter of Mr Doba, Piotr Chmielinski — who is also an adventure kayaker — is expected to arrive in Bermuda today to assist in repairs to Mr Doba’s kayak. In order to not assist Mr Doba in his record attempt, he will most likely seek the nearest port, Bermuda, to make repairs.
