Keep Bermuda Beautiful turns 50 this year — adding fanfare to its recent annual general meeting, where KBB handed out awards to friends and partners in addition to celebrating the accomplishments of 2013.

Margaret Fergusson, the wife of Governor George Fergusson, took the organisation’s President’s Award for her school garden initiative at Government House.

The project brings students from West Pembroke, Northlands and Victor Scott Primary Schools to the property’s gardens, where Mrs Fergusson and Garden Club of Bermuda volunteers teach them about growing food.

Meanwhile, the environmental group Greenrock took KBB’s Environmental Partner Award.

“It is always gratifying to be acknowledged for the work that we do, but it is particularly rewarding when it is by a peer organisation that we hold in high regard,” said Greenrock chairman Nick Campbell, noting that the group worked closely with KBB in the 2013 campaign against single-use plastic bags.

The Rockville Lane Neighbourhood Watch Group was commended as Best KBB Adopt-A-Spot Group for 2013.

And KBB Certificates of Appreciation went to St George’s MP Kenneth Bascome, in recognition of his support for cleaning up the East End; to Essie Hand, who gives environmental education to the hundreds of students from the Catholic Diocese of Bermuda that clean up the Southampton Railway Trail each year in collaboration with KBB and The Fairmont Southampton; and to long-standing KBB supporter Claudine Wilson for her decades as a committee member and clean up volunteer.
