Man jailed for possession of cannabis
A Pembroke man has been jailed for 30 days after being found in possession of 1.1 grams of cannabis.
Thirty-six year-old Michael Clamens said he couldn’t pay the $1,000 fines imposed by Senior Magistrate Archibald Warner and instead was sent to prison.
The court heard hadn’t paid a previous $500 fine for a drugs charge.
Clamens was found in possession of the cannabis within an increased penalty zone.
Prosecutor Nicole Smith said Clamens was arrested by police officers in September last year when, knowing there were warrants out for his arrest, they recognised him standing outside the Bermuda National Library.
After arrest, Clamens he told officers he had a “spliff” in his front pocket.
They found a receipt containing a plantlike substance which, after further analysis, was confirmed to be cannabis.
