‘High adrenalin’ Bermuda Triple Challenge is hailed a success
Bermuda’s Triple Challenge Weekend has been declared a whopping success by organisers, who hope to develop the event into a tourism product as the charity challenge continues to evolve.
The final leg of the competition wrapped up yesterday in Dockyard just ahead of torrential downpours. Overall, more than $30,000 were raised for eight local causes.
“This is the third year for the Island Challenge, but this is the first year of the new concept of the Bermuda Triple Challenge being a three-in-one weekend event,” explained co-founder Jason Correia.
“This is a concept which we’re looking to next year evolve into a sports tourism product — it’s a high adrenalin excursion into Bermuda’s tourism highlights from St George’s to Dockyard to the beaches.”
Mr Correia said it was difficult to measure this year’s challenge over events gone by as 122 teams were spread across a weekend, as opposed to any one event.
“But I was pleasantly surprised that the large number of 144 people signed up for all three,” he added. “There were a lot of people out there this weekend testing themselves for charity.”
Friday night’s footrace in St George’s was followed on Saturday by the South Shore beaches challenge starting in Warwick Camp, followed by yesterday morning’s Dockyard challenge.
The weekend raised $32,275 for eight Bermudian charities: Knowledge Quest, Sunshine League, Raleigh International, The New Beginnings Educational Trust, Bermuda Insurance Institute, East End Primary, St. George’s Preperatory School and Somerset Primary PTAs
The overall winner of the $1,000 grand prize went to top male team The Following, comprising Dom Nanette and Coy Smith.
Second and third for men’s teams went to Strong Butts and The Bernadian Duo.
Foxy Dilemma came first in the female teams, followed by Rapid Thigh Movement and Banangos, while in the mixed team prizes went to Pura Vida, K2 and East Meets West respectively.
Winning corporate teams were Alpha KPMG, followed by Jump the GAAP! and Sneer Bay — and the Youth Team prizes went to the A-Team, followed by Willie and The Chocolate Factory, and the KRyS Global Bermuda Pacers Track Club.
