Library launches new book club
Bermuda National Library (BNL) and the Friends of the Library have launched a book club with a difference.
Not Just Another Book Club is a new programme aimed at promoting discussion of “sensitive and challenging topics maturely and respectfully in a safe space.”
Head Librarian Joanne Brangman explained: “It is not the first book club that we have had but we are looking to do something different with this one.
“We are interested in partnering with local organisations to feature a book that is aligned with their specific cause. We believe it is an excellent way to promote your cause and educate the public through literature.
“This month we are partnering with the Human Rights Commission and have selected the ground breaking book Redefining Realness by NYTimes Best Selling author Janet Mock.
“Janet’s Redefining Realness, My Pathway to Womanhood, Identity, Love and So Much More inspiring true story sheds light on being young, multicultural and transgender in America.”
Ms Mock will join the BNL discussion via video chat on Thursday.
The discussion will be a one-night event only and the facilitators for this month are Zarinah Codrington, president of the Friends of the Library and Zakiya Lord from the Human Rights Commission.
Limited copies of the book are available at the main Library or at local bookstores.
According to a Library statement, Ms Mock’s profile was first published by Marie Claire magazine in which she stepped forward for the first time as a trans woman.
“Those 230 words were life-altering for the People.com editor, turning her into an influential and outspoken public figure and a desperately needed voice for an often voiceless community. For more information on Janet Mock visit her website at www.janetmock.com”
Not Just Another Book Club plans to meet every other month with discussions scheduled for July, September, and November.
