A 16 year old girl was charged this morning with assaulting two teachers at Berkeley Institute.

Taree Wade, of Fentons Drive, Pembroke, pleaded not guilty to unlawfully assaulting and causing bodily harm to Eva Showers and Mary Burgess on May 1.

According to prosecutor Nicole Smith, the brawl broke out after Ms Wade was told by Ms Showers not to eat in class. When she continued, the teenager was ordered to leave the classroom. She returned shortly afterwards saying phrases such as “I hate this school”, and “It’s time for this school to have a Columbine”.

Ms Burgess, who was also in the classroom, told the student to leave again, at which point she clenched her fists and struck out at the teacher. According to prosecutors, some blows made contact, causing Ms Burgess’s face to become bruised. Ms Showers was also hit and injured after she grabbed the girl in an attempt to calm her down.

The court heard that Ms Wade now attends The Education Center (TEC) — an alternate school.

Senior Magistrate Archibald Warner released Ms Wade on $1,000 bail under the condition that she wear an electronic monitoring device restricting her to her home and classes. The matter is set to return to court next month.
