Busy weekend for firefighters
Firefighters had to tackle a series of random blazes over the weekend, but fire chiefs have ruled out foul play as a cause of the blazes.
The first incident took place at around 7.15pm on Saturday when a large pile of wood and debris caught fire from a demolished building on George’s Bay Road in Southampton.
Firefighters battled for two hours to put out the blaze, pouring more than 3,000 gallons of water onto the woodpile, which measured 10ft by 20ft and was several feet high. An excavator was called in to assist in the operation.
Investigators were at the scene and concluded that the debris had spontaneously ignited.
Just two hours later, at around 9.20am, a second alarm was raised after a car burst into flames on Wellman Lane in Warwick. The flames spread to the surrounding brush area and took two firefighters ten minutes to extinguish.
It was later discovered that the vehicle had been abandoned several months ago, although eyewitnesses claimed to have seen a number of individuals inside the car before it ignited.
An hour after that incident had been dealt with, firefighters were called to their third blaze of the night following reports of a small brush fire near Sommersall Road in Smith’s.
The fire was extinguished within five minutes with a booster reel. The cause of the fire has yet to be determined.
Three vehicles and a house were damaged in a blaze in the early hours of Sunday morning.
Just before 3am, three fire trucks and nine firefighters rushed to Gibbs Hill Road in Southampton where a car and two motorbikes were engulfed in flames. A nearby home received heat and smoke damage from the fire, which took 15 minutes to put out. The cause of that blaze is also under investigation.
And last night fire crews attended their second brush fire of the weekend when an area of ground measuring approximately 20ft by 20ft on Judkin Lane in Smith’s caught fire.
Two firefighters spent 20 minutes tackling the blaze, the cause of which is undetermined.
