‘Too hot to use’

Too hot: A stainless steel slide that is part of the newly opened playground at the National Museum, in Dockyard, has been put out of use after concerns about how hot it becomes in the summer sun. The Denmark slide manufacturer is being consulted to find a solution.

Less than a week after opening to the public, the stainless steel slide at the National Museum’s new playground will be closed following complaints from parents that the slide was too hot for their children to use.

“The main slide is basically unusable. It is made of a reflective material and it is hot; too hot to use,” said one woman who asked not to be named.

“We were up there on the weekend and some moms told me ... to watch the slide. Then other moms put a sign up to tell people to check the slide before sending children down it. But seriously, you can’t touch it!”

The playground was designed by Danish company Monstrum.

National Museum director Dr Ed Harris said he was aware of the complaints from parents and said the slide would remain closed until a solution was found.

“We’re consulting with the European manufacturers about a covering on the stainless steel slide. In the Bermuda climate, the summer heat has proved to be too hot,” said Dr Harris. The Museum Playground opened on June 12.
