A return to its pre-Fabian grandeur

The National Museum of Bermuda with the help of sponsors has hired Correia Construction to lead refurbishment works on Hospital Island in Sandys, including the rebuilding of one of Bermuda’s oldest bridges.

Correia Construction workers have been tasked with remediating the existing walkways and shoring up a bathhouse on the island that was badly damaged in Hurricane Fabian.

Michael Tatem, senior project manager for the construction company, said that the goal is to repair the damaged structures on the island, and others in the area, and hurricane-proof the bathhouses so that “we have at least some of our heritage in tact”.

Hospital Island earned its name as the site of the former Royal Naval Hospital, built at the entrance to Crawl Island in 1818.

After the Royal Navy left the Island in the 1950s, the hospital building became an egg farm before being deliberately razed by the Fire Department in November 1972.

Part of the original site is now the home of Lefroy House, a nursing home for senior citizens.
