The Pink Beach Club redevelopment began in earnest on Saturday as Government ministers attended a “modest” groundbreaking ceremony.

Premier Michael Dunkley, Tourism Minister Shawn Crockwell and Home Affairs Minister Michael Fahy said the start of the project signals their Government’s commitment to boosting tourism and creating jobs. The project is the first to benefit from construction tax reliefs announced by the Premier in May, according to a spokeswoman. Mr Dunkley said he was “thrilled” to see the project going ahead.

“It is an indication to the people of Bermuda that tangible work is underway regarding hotel development,” said Mr Dunkley, adding: “ ... this will translate into jobs for Bermudians.”

Demolition works are already under way at the site of the future 34-room boutique hotel — a $51.5 million project by Canadian firm Sardis Developments.

The hotel will feature two restaurants, two swimming pools, as well as gym and spa facilities, condominiums and a private home.

In thanking the Department of Planning for “their efficient processing of this project”, Mr Fahy reiterated the Premier’s comments that the project would open up job opportunities for locals and result in a “dynamic boost for tourism”.

Meanwhile Mr Crockwell said he was “very encouraged” to see the property developed — “proof positive” that “genuine strides” are being made in developing Bermuda’s tourism product.
