Warning about horses on beaches
After receiving complaints from residents, the Department of Parks has advised the public that horses are not allowed on a number of South Shore beaches during this time of year.
A Parks spokesman said the Department has even received reports of horseback riders requesting swimmers to leave the water at Jobson’s Cove, “and are actively investigating these to ensure compliance of the National Parks Regulations”.
“During the period May 1 to October 31 in any year no person shall take or ride a horse on the beaches in South Shore Park, John Smith’s Bay Park, Elbow Beach Park, and Shelly Bay Park but may take or ride a horse on all other public beaches below the high water mark between the hours of 5am and 8am.
The spokesman went on to clarify that the Department collects trash on the beaches Monday through Friday and on Sunday.
