World Cup win adds to new mum’s baby joy
Sunday proved to be an extraordinary day for a 28-year- old Devonshire woman.
Samantha Hill gave birth to her first child — a healthy baby girl — and then watched in ecstasy as her team Germany beat Argentina 1-0 to win the World Cup. She watched the game on a television in the maternity ward at King Edward VII Memorial Hospital.
“It was definitely one of the best days of my life; having my first baby and my team win the World Cup,” said Ms Hill. “It was an extraordinary day that I will never forget.”
Ms Hill went into labour in the early hours of Sunday but took steps to ensure she did not miss Germany clinch a fourth World Cup — and the second at Argentina’s expense.
“I thought I might miss the game when I went into labour and knew I needed a TV for when I came to the hospital,” she said.
“I was in labour in the delivery room with my leg in the air pushing when I ordered the TV. I was like ‘I need my TV for 4 o’clock’ so the nurse signed up my name for my TV.
“Unfortunately the TV guy came all late and you know I told him off. He got here like 4:30pm so the game had started already.”
Substitute Mario Götze’s strike in the second period of extra-time enabled Germany to lift the World Cup for the first time in 24 years at the Maracanã Stadium in Rio de Brazil.
“I was screaming with joy when Götze scored,” Ms Hill recalled. “I was watching with joy with my daughter Dylan sleeping beside me. I was like ‘yes’ as all of the German players came together in celebration.
“It was a very close game that I thought it was going to go to penalties.”
Ms Hill has been a supporter of Germany since the 2010 World Cup in South Africa.
“I picked Germany in the last World Cup and just stuck with them,” she said. “I love the way that they play.”
Just hours before her team triumphed Ms Hill experienced the thrill of being a mom for the first time after giving birth to a healthy eight pound, three ounce baby girl.
“I love my daughter, she is amazing already,” she said. “Labour was very difficult but delivery was a breeze — she was out in 20 minutes.”
