Man admits using fake money
A Sandys man has been remanded into custody after attempting to use counterfeited money.
In Magistrates Court this morning, Lo’Nikco Burgess-Durrant, 24 of Scotts Hill Road, pleaded guilty to having in his possession a $50 Bermudian note which he knew to be counterfeit.
However, he pleaded not guilty to having also a $100 bill which he knew to be a fake.
According to prosecutor Garrett Byrne, Durrant gave a friend — known as Smith — a $50 bill at Docksiders bar on Front Street on July 19.
Upon Smith paying for a drink, the bar tender noticed that the note felt different to other bills, believing it to be counterfeit. Smith and the bar tender argued while Mr Durrant fled the scene.
Police appeared an hour later to confirm that the note was a counterfeit. Mr Durrant was caught and apprehended on Front Street. He was taken to Hamilton Police Station where he admitted the offence.
The defendant was on probation at the time of the offence and wearing an electronic monitoring device.
The probation officer told the court to say that he had not been complying with his probation.
Senior Magistrate Archibald Warner remanded Durrant into custody and ordered a social inquiry report.
The matter will be continued on August 18.
