A St George’s man who pleaded guilty to using threatening words and assaulting a police officer will spend the next 30 days in prison.

In Magistrates’ Court this morning, Kevin Simmons, 22, admitted the offences which took place in Pembroke Park on the evening of June 29.

Prosecutor Carrington Mahoney told the court that police were alerted by members of the public to two males harassing passersby.

He said: “They appeared unsteady on their feet, were sweating profusely and smelling of alcohol.”

He added that they were disrupting traffic by repeatedly wandering into the road.

Mr Simmons admitted threatening and swearing at the arresting officer.

He said: “f**k you. I can’t wait to kill you. Let me out of this seat. I will slit your throat.”

He is then alleged to have spat at the officer.

The defendant denied this, insisting he did not spit directly at the officer.

The court heard Mr Simmons had previous convictions for threatening behaviour, assault and possessing a knife.

He was released from prison in December last year and is currently on probation.

Senior Magistrate Archibald Warner said: “You are capable, based on your background, of carrying out this threat.

“This type of behaviour must be deterred.”

Mr Warner sentenced Mr Simmons to ten days imprisonment for using offensive language, 30 days for using threatening words, and 30 days for assault.

The sentences will run concurrently.
