Large crowds expected at Non-Mariners Race
Cup Match will be followed by another event which will also attract big crowds.
The annual Non-Mariners Race ‘non-event’ is scheduled for this Sunday at Mangrove Bay in Sandys.
The fun competition sees various groups create makeshift boats out of any material they wish — many of which sink.
As the boats aren’t well made and the competitors not experienced sailors, they are called ‘Non-Mariners’.
Traditionally the event has attracted large crowds both on land and on the water.
The ‘race’ is hosted by Sandys Boat Club and is held every year on the Sunday following Cup Match.
Sandys Boat Club Commodore Michael Butterfield said: “We have set up a designated racecourse ahead of time.
“I can’t tell you how many people have signed up now because most people sign up only one or two days before, some even sign up on the day.
“We have had anywhere between seven to 15 floats in the race but we average around ten to 12.
“However, you do tend to find more spectator boats.
“We have a number of different sponsors for the event, including St John Ambulance who last year saved six people.
“We also have Rubis, Bermuda Telephone Company as well as others”.
Entry into the race is $25 which is donated to a charity of the entrants’ choice.
