MARINE RESTRICTIONS TO BOOST SAFETY

Marine restrictions have been set in place to ensure the safety of participants and spectators at Sunday’s Non-Mariners Race.

The popular event will be held at Mangrove Bay in Sandys and is expected to draw large crowds. The area from Kings Point to the Watford Bridge on Boaz Island in Mangrove Bay has been restricted to a five-knot no-wake zone between 10am and 8pm.

Jet skis are prohibited from entering the area east of Kings Point and the Watford Bridge. Detective Superintendent James Howard emphasised that there would be an increased joint law enforcement presence on the water. He said: “The boating public is reminded of the need to exercise care and caution around other vessels and to be on the lookout for swimmers.”

He also encouraged boaters not to mix alcohol with powerboat operating and sailing.

Det Supt Howard added: “I would like to remind the boating public to ensure their vessels are registered; that a current 2014 decal is prominently displayed on the starboard side of the vessel; that they ensure that all required safety equipment is on board; and that they are carrying enough fuel for the intended journey.

“It is also recommended that they file a float plan if they intend to go offshore.”
