Woman fined over unlicensed pit bulls

A woman has been fined $1,000 for keeping two unregistered dogs that are on the banned breed list. Renee Tucker, 23, of Kitty's Drive, Hamilton Parish, pleaded guilty at Magistrates' Court this morning to not holding a valid licence for either animal. Animal wardens from the Department of Environmental Protection visited her home on January 20 this year.Assisted by police and with a search warrant, they discovered a fawn, female pit bull-type dog, plus a black and white male pit bull running freely in the yard. Prosecutor Loxley Ricketts said the defendant was not home at the time but her boyfriend called her and a warden spoke to her by phone. He said the “banned breed was seized from the property” and that Tucker had “no previous convictions for offences of this nature”.Tucker said she had owned one of the dogs for three years and the other for less than a year. “I had planned on getting them licensed but things just happened and I put it off,” she said. “I was trying to get on my feet.”Senior Magistrate Archibald Warner fined her $500 on each count and gave her 30 days to pay.It is The Royal Gazette's policy not to allow comments on stories regarding ongoing court cases.
