Belco awards scholarships to gifted students
Belco has donated $165,000 toward education for local students who showed themselves to be “gifted, dedicated and ready to make a real contribution to the Bermuda community”.
Belco president and CEO Walter Higgins commended the 2014-2015 recipients of the scholarships, educational awards and bursaries, at a presentation held in the company’s headquarters.
Scholarships are valued at $25,000, while educational awards range from $2,500 to $15,000 and Bermuda College bursaries are worth $1,000 per year.
The energy company also gave out maths awards of $750 apiece to seniors at each of the Island’s high schools who took the top maths scores for their whole four years.
The AT Oughton Scholarship, given for postgraduate students in fields other than engineering, went to Dominique Richardson, studying finance at Nottingham Trent University, while the Llewellyn Vorley Scholarships for undergraduate engineering and related science students went to Zeeko Johnstone, studying mechanical engineering at Florida International University, and Matthew Tavares, studying civil engineering at Teesside University in the UK.
