An international United Nations treaty battling organised crime has been extended to cover Bermuda, Governor George Fergusson and Attorney General Trevor Moniz have announced.
The UN Convention against Transnational Organised Crime (UNTOC), adopted in 2000 and ratified by the UK in 2006, will ensure the Island remains “a well-regulated financial services centre”, a Government House statement said.
UNTOC carries crime-fighting measures against offences such as money laundering, cybercrime and drug trafficking. These include the creation of domestic criminal offences, plus new frameworks for mutual legal assistance, law enforcement cooperation and technical assistance.
