A JetBlue flight was diverted to Bermuda today after reports of smoke and fumes inside the aircraft’s cockpit.

The aircraft was reportedly on route between New York’s JFK airport and St Martin when the issues arose, forcing the plane to divert to the Island.

According to Sergeant Russann Francis of the Bermuda Fire and Rescue Service (BFRS), LF Wade International Airport’s Duty Officer contacted the service about the flight being diverted shortly after 11.30am.

“She stated that a Jet Blue Airbus 320 will make an emergency landing in Bermuda due to smoke and fumes issuing in the cockpit”, Sgt Francis said.

“The Jet Blue flight was reported to carry 139 souls with five hours of fuel remaining on board. BFRS were standing by on scene with ten vehicles and 16 personnel as the flight landed safely in Bermuda at 12.07pm.”

The BFRS Emergency Medical Technicians carried out a search of the aircraft and conducted an assessment of everyone on board, but determined that no medical assistance was required. An investigation into the cause of the issue will be carried out.
