Mayor wants boost to St George’s summer ferry service

Service: The fast ferry Millennium cruises along North Shore

The Mayor of St George has called for an increased ferry service next summer.

Garth Rothwell urged Government to enlist the services of the Millennium ferry again for 2015.

And he called for an extra smaller ferry to bring an even greater number of passengers from Dockyard and Hamilton to the East End.

At present it is unclear whether Government will continue with the services of the Millennium ferry, which has proved a big success in the Olde Towne over the last two years.

The Millennium is an on-loan ferry from Rhode Island, which has been used on the St George route during the summer months for a number of years.

Mr Rothwell said: “Our most immediate concern at the moment is the ferry service next year, especially as we understand that the contract with the Millennium has not been renewed.

“This ferry brings thousands of people to St George’s every day and has been a great boon to the town, the retailers and the beaches.

“Looking forward we would very much like to see the Millennium back in St George’s next year.

“We are looking forward to an increased ferry service next year with perhaps the Millennium as well as a smaller ferry bringing people into the town.”

Government has said that it is considering all options to maintain and potentially increase the service to St George’s for 2015.

A spokeswoman for the Department of Transport told the Gazette: “The dedicated St George’s ferry has proven to be very successful and has served the town well over the past two seasons.

“The Ministry is considering all of the options available to maintain and potentially increase the level of service provided to St George’s for next season and beyond.

“We will continue to work very closely with our cruise line partners and local stakeholders over the coming months and aim to be in a position to provide details on the 2015 summer ferry schedule in the New Year.”
