Airport drugs ring arrests
Airport security staff are being quizzed by detectives as part of an investigation into drug trafficking through the facility.
Bermuda Police Service confirmed last night that “we have made a number of arrests” in connection with the inquiry.
The Royal Gazette understands that members of Security Associates — a security firm hired by two airlines to provide ramp security — are being questioned by officers.
Sources claim that police are investigating accusations that staff have been assisting drug smugglers avoid detection by law enforcement agencies when they enter the Island.
Security Associates Chief Operating Officer Carlton Crockwell did confirm that one member of his staff has been interviewed, but claimed that no arrests had been made.
Mr Crockwell said he understood that a number of other people were also being questioned by police.
Aaron Adderley, general manager of operations at LF Wade International Airport, confirmed that police had briefed him on the investigation, but was unable to give further details.
But a spokesman did say that airport officials were “pleased” that the investigation was being pursued.
Police are keeping tight-lipped about the inquiry.
“The Bermuda Police Service can confirm that we have made a number of arrests in connection with various ongoing investigations,” a spokesman said. “As these investigations are still under way and no persons have yet been charged before the court, it is not appropriate to make any further comment.”
In the second three months of this year police made 98 seizures netting drugs with a street value of more than $1.2 million. Twenty-seven of those seizures took place at ports of entry, including the airport.
