Mick Jagger, Tina Turner and Robert Palmer were winners in the first Peace Day 5K run.

Although it was not the real pop stars pounding the streets of Hamilton on Sunday morning, the runners in rock star-inspired costumes caught the eye of passer-bys and were justly rewarded for their efforts with prizes for the best fancy dress costumes at the end of the race.

More than 100 competitors took part, some entering the spirit of the rock-and-pop theme by wearing a costume.

At the front of the race field 13-year-old Max De St Croix was the outright winner, taking 20 minutes 14 seconds to cover the 3.1-mile course. Fastest woman was Victoria Fiddick in 21:22.

The race was part of the Peace Day weekend of events, which started with Friday evening's concert in the Botanical Gardens. A group of fancy dress judges, including singer Heather Nova, watched the race from Front Street before giving their verdicts at the prizegiving in Victoria Park.

Organiser Tony Brannon expressed delight at how many people had participated in the new event.
