The bald facts: Sarah and Martin Brown show off their bald heads after being shaved at the Tranquil Hair and Beauty Salon in a bid to raise funds for hairdresser and family friend Jenna Martin who was diagnosed with ovarian cancer

Sarah Brown and her husband Martin decided on matching looks during a recent visit to a hair salon — and raised $4,000 for a good cause.

For the couple decided to have their heads shaved to raise funds for friend Jenna Maxfield Martin, who was recently diagnosed with ovarian cancer.

Mr and Mrs Brown, from St George’s, appealed to family and friends to sponsor the fundraiser before their appointment with the Tranquil Hair and Beauty Salon last Friday.

Mrs Brown said the couple believed it was an appropriate way to raise money for their friend, who has to make regular trips to Boston for chemotherapy treatment for her illness.

“We wanted to do something drastic to show our support and raise awareness about the disease,” Mrs Brown said.

Mrs Brown said it will take some time for her to get used to her new look.

“On the first day I couldn’t even touch it, it felt so strange,” she said.

“We had to go out and get Factor 65 sun block because our scalps are so white. But we’re lucky in that it’s going to start growing back, whereas Jenna has got a few months of chemo to go.”

Mrs Martin, a hairdresser and mother of five-year-old twins began chemotherapy last month, which has shrunk her tumour to about half its original size. But while insurance covers her medical expenses, other costs, such as travel and accommodation for her family when they visit her in Boston, still have to be paid for. A donor site has already raised $18,000 for the family and on Saturday, Ovarian Cancer Awareness of Bermuda held a cruise to raise more cash.

“It can be incredibly expensive getting treatment overseas and insurance doesn’t cover everything,” Mrs Brown said.
