Bermuda artists feature in US exhibition

Painting by Sharon Wilson

Two Bermuda artists are to exhibit their work in Washington in honour of the 44th Congressional Black Caucus Annual Legislative Conference.

The paintings of award-winning artists Sharon Wilson and Monica Jones will be featured at the National Press Club on Friday.

“We are very excited to have Sharon Wilson and Monica Jones exhibit in Washington DC and show a part of Bermudian life and culture to the American community,” said a Bermuda Government’s Overseas representative.

“It is particularly poignant that we are able to host this event during the Congressional Black Caucus Annual Legislative Week.

“Bermuda is part of the African diaspora and honouring this important week in African American political history in such a manner is significant.

“We are looking forward to a magical evening of art and Bermuda hospitality on American soil this coming Friday.”

Ms Wilson is an internationally renowned artist who received the Queen’s Certificate and Badge of Honour in recognition of her contribution to the Bermuda people.

She is famed for portraying the Island and her people in everyday activities, and paints about relationships.

Ms Jones, a former lawyer and partner with Appleby, has been under the tutelage of Ms Wilson and paints and writes to promote human rights and peace.

A reception will accompany Friday’s exhibition and Ms Wilson will give a lecture on Bermuda life and the humanising impact of her art.

The event is being organised by the Bermuda Overseas Office and is the Office’s first art exhibition.

The 44th Congressional Black Caucus Annual Legislative Conference is being held in Washington from today until Saturday.

The Annual Legislative Conference provides a forum for policy discussions on issues that affect black communities globally, and the convention features more than 70 policy sessions, a national town hall, a job and contract procurement fair, the annual prayer breakfast, and the Phoenix Awards Dinner on Saturday, at which US President Barack Obama will give the keynote address.
