Man denies drunken drive charge
A Southampton man charged with driving his lawyer’s car while impaired has been ordered to pay $1,250 in overdue fines or face time behind bars.
Kent Todd, 53, pleaded not guilty in Magistrates’ Court this morning to driving while impaired, refusing to provide a sample of breath and giving police a false statement in an incident at 12.35am today on Angle Street.
Prosecutors alleged that Mr Todd told police his first name was “Maxwell” and gave officers a false address and date of birth.
Lawyer Cameron Hill, representing Mr Todd, told the court that the defendant was driving his vehicle at the time of the incident.
The court also heard that Mr Todd was convicted of driving and unlicensed and uninsured motorcycle in 2011. At that time, he was ordered to pay $1,250 or face 100 days behind bars, but had not paid the fine as of this morning.
Senior Magistrate Archibald Warner released Mr Todd on $2,000 bail with a like surety for the most recent charges, but ordered that the full sum related to the 2011 matter be paid forthwith, saying: “He had no intention of paying those.”
