Adventurer Baluchi rescued
An extreme adventurer who was attempting to “run” 1,000 miles from Florida to Bermuda in an inflatable bubble was rescued on Saurday by the US Coast Guard.
Reza Baluchi abandoned his effort after be began to suffer from fatigue around 70 nautical miles off the coast of St Augustine, Florida.
Coast Guard spokeswoman Marilyn Fajardo said that an aircrew was able to safely pick up Mr Baluchi and his vessel that morning.
He was then taken to a nearby Coast Guard station in Clearwater where he was evaluated but didn’t suffer any injuries.
According to his website, he intended to travel in a specially adapted ‘hydro pod’ from Miami, “running” parallel to the east coast until he reached Charleston, South Carolina, before turning towards Bermuda.
Mr Baluchi had reportedly tested the hydro pod last year, travelling from Newport Beach to Catalina Island — a 33 mile trip which took around 12 hours.
During the journey, he intended to sleep between 6am and 9am in a hammock inside the pod when the sea is at its calmest. He would then run until his body becomes too hot, at which point he will jump into the sea to cool himself down.
Mr Baluchi set out from Fort Lauderdale on September 27, and was east of Daytona Beach on Friday afternoon.
According to a statement from the US Coast Guard, officials first received reports of Mr Baluchi on Wednesday, at which time he was said to be disoriented, asking officials for directions to Bermuda.
The spokeswoman said: “The Coast Guard Cutter Webber arrived on scene, conveyed the dangers of his voyage and requested Mr Baluchi terminate his trip due to the lack of supplies on board to sustain him. On board, Baluchi had protein bars, bottled water, a GPS and a satellite phone.”
According to his website, he had intended on catching his own food during his trek to the Island.
Mr Baluchi refused to leave his vessel, but officials continued to monitor his movements until he activated his locator beacon on Saturday morning.
The fitness fanatic has completed a string of extreme adventures over the years and has run through Death Valley.
His latest escapade was being done to raise money for children in need and to raise awareness of his Non-Profit Organisation Plant Unity.
While his effort was unsuccessful, it has garnered international attention with a host of news outlets reporting on his rescue, including FOX News, CBS News, TIME and English newspapers The Daily Mail and The Guardian and several in the USA.
