Five food distributors have been recognised for their efforts in helping the hungry.

The five — Lindo’s Family Foods, Butterfield & Vallis, Garden Market, Hunt’s Food and Supplies, and Arnold’s Market, have each been presented with the Bermuda CableVision Community Service award after supporting CableVision’s food drive.

The stores are among dozens of organisations that took part in the drive by placing large barrels at locations around the Island for the collection of non-perishable food items from customers.

At an awards ceremony at the Bermuda Underwater Exploration Institute this morning, CableVision spokesman Mikaela Pearman said: “Fourteen barrels place at these companies’ locations were filled with food, each weighing nearly 400lbs.

“All food was distributed this summer among several non -profit organisations, including the Eliza DoLittle Society food bank, the Seventh Day Adventist feeding programmes and the Coalition for the Protection of Children.

“Normally, the Bermuda CableVision Community Service Award is given to individuals. This is the first time we’re recognising companies for their charitable contributions, because so many of our neighbours would go hungry without their help.”

Community Minister Wayne Scott, who presented awards to representatives from the five organisations, praised them and CableVision for being “good corporate citizens”.

I commend these local companies for their generous donations towards the food drive,” he said.

“Because of their support, charitable organisations in our community can continue to supply food and goods for people in need. On behalf of the Government of Bermuda, I’d like to thanks CableVision and the companies receiving the community service award for caring for their fellow citizens.”
